Sixth Sense

Mise-en-scene is used to give the film a feeling horror. Low key lighting is used in the living room and basement. This gives the sense of something in the unknown which proves to be the case. The darkened lighting scares the viewers as the characters don't seem to paranoid about anything. Furthermore,on top of the fireplace is lots of cards from children that Malcolm has helped through his child psychology. This emphasises his success as well as the plaque he was awarded with. This makes the viewers realise that he is serious about his work and is very good at it as well.

Sound is used in Sixth Sense to also give the film a slight tint of a horror genre. For example ambient sound is used as when the wife gets closer to the phone it gets louder. This creates questions such as why is the phone on the floor? and how did it get there? Also a sting is used when Malcolm's former patient asks 'don't you remember one of your former patients?', this means creates a sense of confusion among Malcolm and the viewers as it is a big clue in why he is there but if Malcolm is such a successful psychologist, why has one of his former patients broken into his house in his underwear? Also a low pitch noise is used in the build up of finding the man who has broken into his house. This creates tension amongst the viewers as they know something is going to happen but do not know when nor what it is going to be.

Camerawork is used to create a sense of being watched. For example, the establishing shot of the living room from the middle of the stairs. This is quite a unique position to use for a shot as it doesn't properly show everything and almost seems as if the camera is from the point of something/someone watching them. This creates nervousness around the characters as the viewers are waiting for something to happen. Also a similar shot has been used when the wife is in the basement. As she looks down the wine cabinet, the camera follows her very slowly. This also creates a feeling of anxiety as the women doesn't know she is being watched. Another type of shot used is a tracking shot which follows the child as he is running down the street and in the background Malcolm can be seen following. Also a whip is used when Malcolm is watching the child come out of his house and then he spots him running away after he has looked at his notes. This creates a rush as Malcolm seems to panic when the boy leaves his sight.

Editing is used in Sixth Sense emphasise what is happening and create a sense of confusion. For example a small bit of slow motion is used after Malcolm gets shot to distort the view of what is happening. a question created due to this is: does Malcolm survive?  and what went wrong with his former patient? Just after the use of the slow motion, a fade to black is used. which gives the audience time to digest what has happened and come to their own conclusions so they can have their own view on what happened and why it happened.
